Chernobyl Nether Portal Sounds

Now this map has been around for years now, but I have never understood why I hear nether portal sounds in certain areas of the map, a creative idea of showing radiation around a certain area? Please reply what you think the nether portal sounds are, i'm curious as to what other people think its for.

The nether portal sounds are there to try make it sound eerie (idk how to spell it), the portals are hidden under the map
